Rich or poor, we are entitled to equal justice. But bail creates a two-tier system: One for people with money, and one for everyone else. The Bail Project pays bail for those in need – for free. At the same time, we are working to take money out of justice. Our mission is to create a fairer system, one that truly treats people as innocent until proven otherwise.

Since 2017, The Bail Project has directly helped thousands of people across America.

We pay bail for low-income people at no cost to them. We also help them return to court and navigate voluntary supportive services while they wait for their trial. Using the data and stories we gather every day, we provide evidence that informs better policies at the local, state, and federal levels.

Our data, gathered from thousands of bailouts across the country, tells an indisputable and positive story:

Bail is not what makes people return to court.

Knowing this, we focus on four key goals:

Extending

Extending a helping hand to those who need it right now.

Advocating

Advocating for evidence-based pretrial policies and practices.

Demonstrating

Demonstrating an alternative to bail: Community Release with Support.

Elevating

Elevating the stories of those harmed by unaffordable bail.
