Johanna Steinberg is the Legal & Advocacy Director at The Bail Project.
Before joining TBP, Johanna was the General Counsel and Director of Impact Litigation at The Bronx Defenders. She originated both of these roles and created the Impact Litigation Practice, developing and supervising affirmative strategic litigation to achieve systemic reforms. Johanna also cumulatively spent over a decade at the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), most recently as Senior Counsel where her work included class action litigation, post-conviction appeals on behalf of death-sentenced individuals, and other advocacy concerning racial bias in the criminal justice system. Johanna has also been a staff attorney in the Criminal Defense Practice of The Bronx Defenders, an E. Barrett Prettyman Fellow in Georgetown University Law Center’s Criminal Justice Clinic, and a law clerk to the Honorable Virginia A. Phillips of the Central District of California. She graduated with a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, an LL.M. in Trial Advocacy from Georgetown University Law Center, and an A.B. from Brown University.
