FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(AUSTIN, TX) — Today, Governor Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 6 (SB 6), which expands the use of cash bail in Texas. In response, The Bail Project issued the following statement:

“This regressive legislation is part of an ongoing assault by Texas legislators on our fundamental rights, including voting rights, reproductive rights, and now, the presumption of innocence. Senate Bill 6 fails to advance public safety. Instead, it expands cash bail to the benefit of the bail bond industry while ensuring that more people will be held in jail before being convicted of a crime because of poverty. This legislation will further entrench racial and economic disparities in Texas’ criminal legal system without addressing the safety concerns of communities.”
