In New Bern, The Bail Project has partnered with the Craven County Community Bail Fund. Our partnership site serves people incarcerated at the Craven County Detention Facility in the Craven County Courthouse District 3B.

Craven County Community Bail Fund started doing bailouts in early 2021. They post bail for people who are held in pretrial detention and who cannot afford to pay their own bonds. Craven County Community Bail Fund engages in local activism, fundraising, and community organizing in order to raise awareness and end pretrial incarceration.

The pretrial population in Craven County has octupled since 1970. The total jail population is five times the size it was in 1970.

In North Carolina, Black and Native American people are overrepresented in both jail and prison populations. White people are underrepresented in the state’s incarcerated populations.

The number of women in Craven County jails in 2018 is more than 16 times higher than the number of women incarcerated in 1970.

In the last 20 years, North Carolina counties have spent approximately $1.4 billion building and maintaining jails
