The Bail Project – Augusta serves people incarcerated at the Charles B. Webb Detention Center in the Superior Court of Augusta Judicial Circuit court system.
In early 2020, a bill to limit the release of people on their own recognizance, without cash bail, gained momentum through Georgia’s state legislature. The legislation puts Georgia out of step with many other states that have taken steps to limit the use of cash bail, not expand it. Yet in Augusta, as the coronavirus hit the county’s jail systems, circuit judges signaled that they were persuaded to begin releasing more people on their own recognizance to reduce the spread of COVID-19 behind bars.
The number of people incarcerated pretrial in Augusta-Richmond County more than tripled between 1970 and 2017.
The number of Black people incarcerated pretrial exceeds 1% of the whole Black population in the county.
There were nearly five times as many women jailed in Augusta-Richmond County in 2017 as there were in 1970.
