The Bail Project / The Bail Project Denounces Police Violence Against Protesters
June 2, 2020 – In response to reports of growing police violence against peaceful protesters, The Bail Project issued the following statement:
“In this moment of collective grief and outrage at the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and what they represent, thousands of people are taking to the streets. The vast majority are marching peacefully to demand justice, accountability, and an end to a pandemic that has long ravaged our country: police violence against Black Americans. They are doing so with courage and solidarity, and despite the risk to their health, because enough is enough. Black lives matter. These police killings must end once and for all.
At The Bail Project, our hearts are filled with pain and sadness about these tragedies, and we remain committed to doing our part in protecting the rights of those who are protesting for their lives and for real change. Our teams are working around the clock in cities where we operate sites, responding to requests for bail assistance, and helping locate arrested family members. In most of these cities, from Indianapolis to Louisville, we’re hearing reports of peaceful protesters being tear-gassed, shot at with rubber bullets, and beaten by police. We condemn this violence and call on elected officials to speak up. There is no excuse for excessive and unjustified use of police force against civilians exercising their right to protest. Right now is the moment to show you’ve finally listened and understood what must be done to end racial terror in America.”
