Cash bail serves as an example of the deep-rooted inequality that persists long after Juneteenth, particularly within our criminal justice system. Black Americans are disproportionately impacted by cash bail, incarcerated at six times the rate of white Americans, and often face higher bail amounts. This perpetuates a vicious cycle of poverty and incarceration.
Our client Wydell experienced this pain firsthand. A hardworking father preparing to move his family to Atlanta, Wydell was wrongfully arrested in St. Louis when he was falsely accused of stealing his own car, selling drugs, and carrying an illegal firearm.
At The Bail Project, we believe freedom should be free. This June 19th, as we celebrate the true meaning of freedom and honor the strength and resilience of Black communities, we’re reminded of our duty to continue the fight for America’s unfulfilled promise of freedom for all.
Our incredible donors have helped more than 40,000 clients like Wydell by providing free bail support and connecting them to vital community-based support services like housing, healthcare, mental health support, rides to court, and court notifications. Through their donations, they’ve helped prevent over 1.4 million days of incarceration and have saved taxpayers over $110 million.
This Juneteenth, as attacks on Americans’ freedoms feel especially heightened, we’re asking for your help to continue every aspect of this critical work. By removing financial barriers to justice and advancing systemic policy reform, we can build a more equitable pretrial justice system for all, inching us closer to realizing America’s dream of true freedom together.
Will you join us in this fight for freedom by donating $19 in honor of June 19th today?
