The Bail Project – Houston serves people incarcerated at the Harris County Jail in the District Court and County Courts-at-Law court systems.
In April of 2020, we formed a partnership site with the group Restoring Justice amid the coronavirus pandemic, when reducing the Harris County Jail population became more critical than ever. We continue to work closely in collaboration with Restoring Justice to identify clients, direct them to holistic services once they’re released from jail, and push for pretrial justice in Central Texas.
The number of people incarcerated in Harris County increased about 50% between 1970 and 2017.
The number of women incarcerated in Harris County tripled from 1970 to 2017.
More than twice as many Black people are in jail in Harris County compared to white people, a disproportionate amount in comparison to the overall county population.
