On July 1, 2022, a new law went into effect in Indiana restricting our ability to help low-income Hoosiers in need of bail. The Bail Project is currently challenging this law in court. At the current time, we have ceased providing free bail assistance in Indiana. Though our local branches are unable to accept referrals at this time, our teams in Gary and Indianapolis will continue supporting current clients of The Bail Project with court notifications, transportation assistance, and voluntary referrals to social services and community resources as needed.
There were nearly four times as many people incarcerated in Lake County in 2017 than there were in 1970.
The number of people incarcerated pretrial state-wide in Indiana more than tripled from 1978 to 2013.
The number of women incarcerated in Lake County was nearly 14 times greater in 2017 than it was in 1970.
There are over three times as many Black people as whites in jail in Lake County, but Black people only make up 23 percent of the general population.
