The Bail Project – Fayetteville serves people incarcerated in Northwest Arkansas at the Washington County and Benton County Jails, whose cases are pending in the Circuit Courts of Washington, Madison, and Benton Counties court systems, as well as the District Courts of each county.
Our teams in Arkansas operate at its very northwest tip, in Benton and Washington counties. In Washington, jail overcrowding reached such a critical point that people were forced to sleep on the floors. In September 2019, The Bail Project committed to working with the county to reduce the jail population as quickly as possible.
Arkansas’ pretrial jail population has more than doubled since 1979.
Throughout the state, Black people make up only 15% of the general population but 42% of the jail and prison population.
Since 1980, the number of women in jail has increased 1,456%, and the number of women in prison has increased 1,231%.
On a per capita basis, the most rural places in the state often lock up the most people in jail and send the most people to prison.
